ACTNews, JAKARTA – Allah has created mankind as the khalifah, stewards of the earth, not just to live, but also to serve and love Allah. Therefore, Allah has prescribed acts of worship to prove our willingness to strive to get close to Him, one of which is animal sacrifice, known also as udhiyyah or qurbani.
“Qurbani comes from the root word qaraba, yaqrabu, which means ‘to get close’. Therefore, qurbani is an act of worship to get one closer to Allah,” explained Dr. Amir Faisal Fath, an Indonesian Islamic scholar.
Essentially, said Dr. Fath, qurbani is not merely about slaughtering animals for their meat, for slaughtering the animals is a symbol of slaughtering the greed, gluttony, rage, pride, sloth and all of our evil nature.
Spiritually, qurbani also eternalize our wealth and turn it into something that can help us in the hereafter. In social aspect, qurbani is a form of charity to share happiness and benefits to our brethren.
This is why many verses in the Qur’an also emphasize animal sacrifice as an important act of worship. One of the surahs in the Qur’an that mentions sacrifice is Qur’an chapter 108 which reads, “Indeed, We have granted you, [O Muhammad], al-Kawthar. So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone]. Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off.”
Therefore, the moment of Eid-ul-Adha is a moment of worship and sharing. Everybody can do the qurbani: men and women, the old and the young, the rich and the poor. Everybody has the same chance to perform this annual act of worship and spread happiness to others.
By sharing happiness through the sacrificial meat, our love towards each other will strengthen, including the love towards our brethren in Islam that we have never met.
In recent years, Global Qurban Aksi Cepat Tanggap has been channeling the qurbani meat and animals from the generous donors. At the moment, Global Qurban Aksi Cepat Tanggap is once again preparing to serve the society to help distributing the qurbani meat. Our teams will once again distribute the meat to regions across Indonesia and several other countries afflicted by humanitarian crises and natural disasters.
